September Board of Education meeting recap

At the September 12, 2016 Board of Education meeting, information and action items were presented as follows:

 



Information Items:

  • Driver’s Education Update – Since beginning in October 2014, Jordan Driving School has delivered 9 classes with 347 students. Of those, 332 students completed the behind the wheel driving portion of the class.  JDS operates in Bladen County with four (4) vehicles.
  • Parent Involvement Update – Overview of Parent University and the 2016-17 dates of parent workshops located here.
  • Assessment Data Summary – The district moved out of low performing status with the 2015-16 test results. Five (5) schools identified as low performing schools (BBM, BBP, BLP, EA, EBHS). Full report here.

  • School Consolidation Review – Administration is synthesizing the review conducted by NC DPI; identifying critical issues with Maintenance Department; further refining plan for any revisions; consideration of new construction in light of $7.3 million debt still owed (paid off in 2021) for two high schools and the 2011 QSCB bond (paid from sales tax revenue) for Tar Heel Middle floor replacement at a cost of $101,000.

Action Items:

  • Approved thirty-six (36) fundraiser requests located here.
  • Approved Occupational Therapy contract for the 2016-2017 school year located here.
  • Approved submission of Phase I Comprehensive Innovative High School application to the NC DPI  for the 2017-2018 school year located here.
  • Approved Parent Advisory Councils for the 2016-2017 school year located here.
  • Approved School Safety Coordinator (position will be full-time in the schools with the cost shared between BC Sheriff's Office and BC Schools) for the 2016-2017 school year located here.
  • Approved agreement between Bladen County Health Department and Bladen County Schools for the School Nurse program located here.
  • Approved Certified/Classified Personnel items located here.

Superintendent's Report:

  • Dr. Taylor reminded board members that the regional School Board Association meeting will be held on September 15 in Fayetteville; Bonnell Walker will serve as the Vice-President for the district for the meeting.
