Job Shadowing is a Day of Fun
February 12th was Bladen County Schools’ National Groundhog Job Shadow Day. Eighth graders from all Bladen County Middle Schools participated in the experience. Approximately 75 students were selected to take part after writing an essay on their career choice, having passing grades in all subjects, no unexcused absences, no more than one visit to ISS, and demonstrating responsible and mature behavior.
Students began their day with breakfast at the Powell-Melvin Agricultural building and from there departed to one of 20 different job sites. Prepared with questions for their site host, students were able to experience day to day operations of places such as the Sheriff’s Department and Elizabethtown Veterinary Hospital.
Upon returning to the Agricultural Building, everyone enjoyed a pizza lunch provided by Star Telephone. Stacie Kinlaw with Bladen County 4-H and Bridgette White with Bladen County Schools gave an inspiring and entertaining presentation on “What Not to Wear to an Interview”. The students enjoyed the program and came away with ideas on what to wear and what not to wear for future job and college interviews.
This event would not be possible without the continued support of the job site hosts. The CTE Department and Job Shadow Committee would like to recognize and thank the following businesses for their support: Bladen County Sheriff’s Department, Bladen Community College, Bladen County Cooperative Extension Office, Elizabethtown Veterinary Hospital, Signlogic, Star Telephone, East Bladen High School, West Bladen High School, Elizabethtown Primary School, Fisher Clothing Store, Bladen County Public Library, Bladen Soil Conservation, Ron Warren Studio, Bladen County Health Inspection, Dublin Primary School, Dickerson Pharmacy, Adams Architect, Bladen County School Bus Garage, Doggie Styles, Bladen County Clerk of Court, Signlogic, Bladen EyeCenter, and Danaher Controls .
To complete the day, students showed their special appreciation to their job host by providing a handwritten thank you card.
