Four adults stand side by side in front of a wall decorated with colorful student artwork, each holding a winter coat. From left to right, a woman in a patterned blouse holds a pink coat; retired educator Jane Winters, wearing a striped shirt and glasses, holds a gray and white coat; a man in a red shirt and plaid tie holds a black coat; and a woman in a red top holds a cream-colored coat.

Bladen County Schools extends our deepest gratitude to retired educator Jane Winters of Wilmington, NC, for her incredible generosity and support of our students.

Mrs. Winters—who helped found New Horizons Elementary in Wilmington and has continued tutoring since her retirement—delivered approximately 100 winter coats for Bladen County Schools students. For the past several years, she has organized coat drives in Wilmington, and after noticing increased local support from area churches, she decided to expand her efforts to help students across the state.

Having vacationed at White Lake for more than 35 years, Mrs. Winters shared that donating to Bladen County Schools felt like a natural fit.

At Bladen County Schools, we know that when students’ basic needs are met, they are better prepared to learn and thrive. As we head into the cooler months, we are truly thankful for Mrs. Winters’ compassion, commitment, and belief that everyone has the capacity to give back.
