⚽️The Board proudly recognized West Bladen soccer player Jonah Bryan and Coach Brett Jackson for their outstanding sportsmanship and leadership. Their actions during an East vs. West match reflect the very heart of our district theme, From Learners to leaders, showing that true success comes from courage, integrity, and respect.

🎤Two community members spoke during Citizen Participation.

  • Charles McKoy spoke about being proactive to help students achieve their full potential, specifically addressing mental health concerns.

  • Edward Smith asked for advice on next steps regarding the former Plain View School, and how the Alumni Association should proceed in their efforts to obtain the building for community use.

Information Items

📊Director of Testing, Accountability and Federal Programs Mr. Brendan McCarthy presented the 2024 - 2025 School Accountability Results. While acknowledging continued challenges and opportunities for growth, McCarthy was quick to highlight and celebrate all of the successes:

  • 75% of schools met growth expectations

  • Elizabethtown Middle School increased its achievement score, exceeded growth, and raised its School Performance Grade (SPG) from F to D.

  • Clarkton School of Discovery increased its achievement score and raised their SPG from D to C. 

  • 5 school saw improvement in their achievement score

📍Dr. Jason Atkinson shared School Improvement Plans and the District Improvement Plan for Low Performing Schools. Information on how to view School Improvement Plans is available on our website at https://www.bladen.k12.nc.us/about-us/school-improvement-plans

📍Director of Maintenance Mr. Bennie Lennon reviewed Capital Outlay Projects.

📍Deputy Superintendent Ms. Ann Brown provided an update regarding the 25-26 SRO Contract.

Action Items

📍Executive Officer of Finance and Business Services Mrs. Susan Harrison presented options for supplemental pay for athletic coaches. The BOE approved the following supplement schedule which is paid at the completion of each sport’s season:

  • High School Coaches: $500.00

  • High School Assistants: $300.00

  • Middle School Coaches: $350.00

  • Middle School Assistants: $150.00

📍The BOE approved Dr. Atkinson’s request to submit applications to the state requesting funding for construction projects at Bladenboro Primary and Elizabethtown Primary.

📍The BOE approved the 2025 Summer Custom Policy Updates

📍The BOE approved a Superintendent Evaluation Instrument as presented by Chairman Singletary.
